Selecting the right baby and infant clothes

Home No Comments »

Dressing up your little one can be great fun, and thanks to the innumerable number of designers and brands we have these days, the choices are unlimited too! In such a situation, however, what most of us tend to forget is that baby and infant clothes are more than just about making them look cute. It is also about comfort and being practical, which in fact should be your first criteria for the right infant clothing.

Since here we are dealing with infants, it maybe tough to really know if the baby is comfortable or not. Generally, there are four ways to know if the clothes are good enough for the baby’s comfort.

Firstly, make sure that the baby and infant clothes you select are not too tight on any body part. The baby pants should be especially loose, since extra space would be required for the nappy. The more stretchable the clothes are the better.

Secondly, make sure that the fabric and the stitching is soft on their tender skin. Feel every corner of the clothing with your hands and fingers to make sure there is no faulty end that could pierce into their skin and hurt them.

Thirdly, it is important to remember that the correct size of the dress is very significant. While dresses that are too short may not fit well enough, extra large clothes might cause tripping over if your baby is a toddler, or has started to crawl around. Go for clothes that fit just right.

Fourthly, it is also important to make sure that the baby and infant clothes you select are suitable for the season and the weather conditions. It may surprise you to know how many parents actually tend to ignore this fact. Select only such fabrics that you would yourself wear in the same season. However, if the baby is weak, you may need some extra covering to make him warmer.

While that was all about comfort, there are some other factors you should take care of too, in order to ensure that you go for the most practical stuff. The design of the infant clothes, though undoubtedly look great when they are stylish and different, do not go too well for the baby if they are complicated to handle. Easy to wear clothes, with quick zippers, soft elastics and tender but firm buttons, with less of frills and laces are the best options. Go for such baby and infant clothes that are easy to wear and take off. It would make your life easier too!

To make a smart buy opt for such fabrics that are easily washable and avoiding light colors, especially white is important. This is because when you are dealing with an infant you never really know how badly the outfit might get treated. With babies, there would be no regard for their maintenance, even though you have spent a fortune on their dressing! It is obviously better to go for stuff that you can maintain well, even when they can’t.

The necessity of health insurance is irrefutable. Life is unpredictable and diehard as we are, we try to make it as hassle free as possible. We plan our future on the assumption that we will remain healthy and fit to work. Any unpredictable health related problems not only affects our working capability but also entails considerable expenditure.

Some organizations have their own healthcare facilities but unless they are large enough they find it uneconomical. Some do opt for tie-ups with hospital chains. Now, if you are in Illinois, with no organization backup for medical expenses, then let us examine the available health insurance in Illinois.

We find basically four options available. They can be private health insurance, health insurance through high-risk pools, health insurance through the Chambers of Commerce and health insurance through Income Eligible Programs.

These risk pools are state sponsored and are for people with medical history. Even though they can financially afford to buy a health insurance plan, they are refused. Sometimes the insurance companies are required to contribute to this risk pool to keep it floating.

There is another plan for the uninsured, providing just basic healthcare. This plan is called Guaranteed-issue Mini-med health insurance plan.

“Cover The Uninsured” is a project run by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation designed to bring as many uninsured under the fold of health insurance. Georgetown University has published a comprehensive guide to health insurance in Illinois.

GONE FISHING!

Entertainment No Comments »

We live in an inland town – if we drove to any coastline, the minimum time would be about 24 hours of straight driving. Unfortunate for a family who loves seafood. My husband, Roger, is a fan of cioppino with all these shellfish in it. For myself I prefer fresh caught seafood, tuna, or marlin just caught that day and lightly cooked on the grill. What a delight! Grocery market fish is good and nutritious, but the fresh caught is heaven! Last year we decided to indulge these tastes and try the Florida Keys we’d been hearing so much about, for our annual seafood run. We would find tropical accommodations for our family and our in-laws and rent a 225 horsepower Yamaha 4-stroke motor fishing boat for our fishing excursions.

The Florida Keys accommodations we found were truly delectable – I couldn’t get enough of the palms and evergreen trees and the ferns! What a delight to my winter weary soul! You could just walk out and sit on the beach and stare at the waves, or go swimming. And the sunsets! The colors! But I’m getting off the track – I was going to tell you about the fishing. The people we rented the Florida Keys accomodations from told us they would have a 21-foot guest boat for us all ready when we arrived, and they did. Roger and Grandpa decided to go out right away and check out the boat and the water. The boat was kindly gassed up for us, and it had fishing rods and tackle and an ice chest – all just waiting for the first catch of the day. Our oldest son Tuck, just turned nine, was determined to go with them, and Grandpa volunteered to keep him in his sights, so off they went – high as kites, not on beer, but on the sheer joy of gliding over the water, smelling the slightly fishy tang of the salt water, with Tuck hanging over the side of the boat gazing into the crystal clear depths.

For our first Florida Keys dinner we had fresh tuna – you have no idea how delicious it is on the day it is caught! And have you ever enjoyed tropical fruits in their own homeland – bananas, papayas, mangos – we had stocked up on these delights. They were ripe and luscious.

The next day, the guys decided to go a little farther afield (or should I say awater?). Grandma and I were anxious, but we really didn’t want to spoil their fun. Fortunately we had thought to provide ourselves with a hand held GPS that would help them keep tabs on their location. Grandpa was a mining prospector and so understood the coordinates without a learning curve. They cruised the shallow waters for a while, then ventured out into deeper waters. The fishing boat had a depth fishfinder and they were looking for the more exotic fish. Tuck was the first to see the dolphin. He screamed with delight and could hardly bear the excitement as other dolphins surfaced and swam alongside the boat, diving and cavorting in the water..

So sorry you guys couldn’t be with us on this one! For consolation, we’re sending you a two-hour video so you can see all the things we did and saw. Wanna join us next year?

Emerging Concrete Bollards: Blending Function with Beauty

Business No Comments »

A bollard may be succinctly defined as a short vertical post. Originally, the term was employed to denote a post employed on a quay for mooring ships. In the modern context, the word bollard refers to vertical residential or landscape structures of varying materials, shapes and sizes performing a range of beautifying, safety, traffic-regulation and even anti-terrorist functions. The name bollard is inherited from the Norman-French name Boulard, & believed to be named after John C. Bollard of the Bollard & Stanchion company.

Concrete bollards have evolved from their crude rudimentary form to exceedingly decorative concrete bollards. A retractable bollard or a removable bollard is one that can be lowered into the ground, either automatically or manually, when not needed. Hence, removable bollards alternatively create opportunities for vehicular control as well as pedestrian accessibility at different times. The term “robotic bollards” has been applied to traffic barricades that are capable of positioning themselves into earmarked spots on a roadway.

Bicycle bollards have been extensively raised in various parts of the country to streamline the traffic of bikes as well as enhance safety of the bikers. From the growing popularity of bicycle bollards, it would appear that the expense entailed has been regarded as worthwhile.

None would dispute the utility, even the virtual indispensability, of concrete bollards in diverse public spheres and applications. However, there are several who might still regard the stout jutting structures as detracting from the architectural symmetry of the scenario, even as eyesores and ugly blots on the landscape. Under the circumstances, it cannot behoove any considerate and competent administration to adopt an attitude of “Like it or lump it” towards the hapless lay citizens of the region.

The aesthetic impact of concrete anchors can be determined to a degree by the choice of material employed for bollard designs. Timber bollards and concrete bollards have yielded in preference to the more sleek steel bollards as well as aluminum bollards. LED {light emitting diode} aluminum bollards have emerged as a design that results in child-safe decorative bollards that are a delight to behold at night. Wooden bollards, such as Indian teak bollards, may offer a traditional touch to the artistically inclined. Steel bollards could be made of either heavy-duty high-strength steel or stainless steel. The steel bollards lend themselves to being painted with a UV {ultraviolet}-resistant powder coat to match one’s color scheme.

Has this problem of matching the utility of public bollards with the citizens’ expectations of minimal aesthetics been resolved elsewhere? How have other countries fared in blending the function of concrete bollards with an appearance that is pleasing to the eye?

The UK and Ireland, while not remaining strangers to metal bollards and alloy bollards, have employed several types of decorative concrete bollards with immense success.

Australia has experimented and acquired considerable expertise in T-top aluminum bollards fitted with ornamental reflective bands. The outdoors beautifying accessories to garden bollards and parking bollards involve such innovative features as urns, bird-baths, plaques, masks and benches. These effectively convert a rigid column into a product of a different genre altogether, one imbued with taste and desirability.

Australia teems with decorative landscape bollards almost as a form of public sculpture. Usually, wooden bollards are effectively modified and painted to resemble human figures. These figures may be variously historical or contemporary, specific or generic, and may be located singly or in clusters along the waterfront or other areas of public gathering. The city of Geelong in Victoria delightfully portrays its history as a major Australian port through human-shaped bollards, almost a la ancient Rome.
